I've been absolutely besotted (always wanted to use that word) with the new baby elephant at the Portland zoo, born on Saturday. On the news last night, they had video of the baby "scampering around" the enclosure, bumping into his mom's legs and nursing. What a cutie...can't wait to go see this little guy.
From Oregonlive, here is the latest: "Inside the elephant barn Tuesday, the moment Oregon Zoo keepers have waited for finally arrived. They released Rose-Tu and her infant calf born Saturday from the chains and harness that had held them apart. The pair then wandered freely together for most of the day. The curious infant, about waist-high to an average adult human, trotted after his mother with his trunk flopping like a wet noodle, his eyes no longer looking wild from distress. He bumped into her legs at times and once mistook her knee and her elbow for a place to nurse. His skin is covered in dark hair he will lose as he ages, and his tail has a tuft of hair on the end. Keepers won't know until he's older whether he inherited his mom's or his dad's features. Like any infant, he tires easily. When he stopped to rest, he wobbled on his feet, lowered his head and dropped his trunk to the ground, where the end curled up like a pig's tail. He closed his eyes and slept".
Isn't new life precious!
Awww! How sweet! Congrats on your new arrival : )
